Gas turbine flow meters measure gas flow with high precision. Proper handling, installation, and maintenance are crucial for their performance and longevity. This guide covers essential practices to ensure your gas turbine flow meter operates accurately and efficiently.

1. Transport and Storage

Handle gas turbine flow meters carefully during transport and storage. Dingcheng Instruments ships flow meters in wooden crates for protection. After receiving the device, remove the protective tape from the flanged inlet and outlet. Inspect the rotor to ensure it moves freely by using compressed air.

2. Pre-installation Preparation

Before installation, clean the pipeline to remove rust, debris, or any contaminants. This step is critical. Leftover foreign material can damage the flow meter and affect its measurement accuracy.

3. Installation Requirements

Install the gas turbine flow meter horizontally to ensure stable operation. If the meter has a lubrication system, install it with the lubricator opening facing upward. For flow meters with a nominal diameter (DN) of 200 or less, vertical installation is acceptable. In this case, ensure the gas flow moves from top to bottom.

Install straight pipe sections of the same nominal diameter as the flow meter upstream and downstream. These sections should each be at least 2DN in length. Any upstream piping contraction or expansion should have an angle no greater than 30° to maintain smooth flow.

For ease of maintenance and stable gas flow, install a bypass pipe in the pipeline near the flow meter.

4. Startup and Operation

Start the flow meter with a gradual increase in pressure. Rapid valve opening can cause shock loading, which may damage the turbine’s rotor. Always increase gas flow gradually to avoid sudden pressure changes.

If welding is needed near the flow meter, remove the flow meter before starting the work. Welding near the meter can expose it to high temperatures, potentially causing permanent damage.

5. Correct Direction and Sealing

Ensure the gas flow direction matches the arrow on the meter housing. Incorrect installation can lead to damage. Align the flow meter’s inlet and outlet concentrically, and tighten all bolts evenly for proper sealing. Never allow sealing material to protrude into the pipeline from the flanges to maintain measurement accuracy.

6. Pipeline Environment Requirements

Keep the pipeline free of vibrations, and ensure the gas flow remains stable. Pulsating gas flow or the presence of impurities can damage the flow meter. Install a filter upstream of the meter if the gas is expected to contain debris or contaminants.

7. Protection for Outdoor Installations

For outdoor installations, protect the flow meter from environmental elements. Use appropriate weatherproofing measures, such as shelters or covers, to guard against rain, wind, and extreme temperatures, which can affect performance.

8. Operating Flow Range

To ensure reliable performance, operate the gas turbine flow meter within 20% to 80% of its maximum rated flow. Short-term overloading is allowed, but the flow should not exceed 120% of the meter’s rated capacity. Limit this condition to a maximum of 30 minutes.

9. Maintenance and Inspection

Regularly inspect and maintain the gas turbine flow meter. Check the rotor, bearings, and seals to ensure proper function. Also, confirm that the meter operates within its recommended flow range. Keep the pipeline clear of contaminants to avoid damage to the flow meter.
